Missouri NEA Board of Directors meeting, September 22, 2018
Executive Director’s report:
Karen Struemph presented the Financial Report. She shared that staff is preparing for the annual audit. She summarized the completion of the year’s capital budget projects (HQ elevator, St. Louis office renovation, tech upgrades, etc) and presented the proposed projects budget for next year.
Otto Fajen and Melissa Albright presented the proposed Legislative Platform to the Board. The platform includes the belief and action statements with a new Appendix that contains the rationales for all planks. The Legislative/Resolutions Committee will present the newly formatted document to the Fall Representative Assembly in November.
Vice president Fullington reviewed the Constitution and Bylaws compliance report. Leaders are encouraged to submit their local documents as soon as they can and he reviewed several resources that are available to help locals complete the adoption process.
MNEA Leadership Follow Up meetings will include important training on H B 1413 reporting requirements, assistance with constitution/bylaws adoption, and preparing for elections and bargaining. Dates: Kansas City (9/27), Springfield (10/1), St. Louis (10/4).
Leaders are encouraged to bring socks and underwear for the Rock the Socks Campaign and items for the PAC silent auction at the MNEA Fall Representative Assembly.

Executive Director’s report:
- Staff announcements - DeeAnn Aull announced the retirement of UDs Terri Coburn and Steve Geiger. She welcomed Roxanne Bly to the HQ staff and thanked Sherry Talbot and Becky Dodds for their assistance during recent months.
- Clean Campaign update – The ballot initiative won the appeal at the appellant court level. Optimistic that it will appear on the November ballot.
- HB 1413 information – The lawsuit is moving forward, and the preliminary injunction is ready when all parties have been subpoenaed.
- PAC and Ballot Issue Crisis Fund Contributions – Data indicates a significant increase in PAC contributors. BICF contributions are lower than last year. Leaders are encouraged to remind members of the past and present successes the BICF has made possible and to consider additional planning to increase contributions to the Ballot Issue Crisis Fund.
- Membership report – ED Aull shared positive data in all enrollment areas. 92.5% of all MNEA members have renewed their membership for 2018-19. To date, MNEA has enrolled 2,974 new members. MNEA led the NEA Midwest region in early enrollments. Back to School membership campaigns have been very successful across the state. Leaders are reminded to plan additional membership drives utilizing the Welcome Back re-enrollment program.
