CONGRATULATIONS and THANKS
President Murray thanked committee members and chairs for their work during the October 10
meetings. He shared that NEA has approved $500,000 in support of defeating Amendment 3.
REPORTS
President/VP Reports – President Murray and Vice President McIntosh shared their work
during September and October. President Murray has been meeting personally with MNEA
award winners and teachers of the year honorees to present awards. He shared the continuing
work and advocacy occurring around the pandemic and school reopening plans. He thanked the
staff and local leaders for their ongoing work under difficult circumstances on behalf of
members. McIntosh shared resources and information for supporting LGBTQ students and
invited board members and guests to participate in the virtual NEA Leadership Institute.
NEA Director Report - Directors Paul Guess and Andy Slaughter highlighted NEA activities
from September Superweek and the discussions they had while lobbying the MO congressional
delegation: emergency funding, technology access, and police reform/racial justice. Their full
report is attached.
Executive Director Report – DeeAnn Aull shared information about MNEA’s ongoing
response to COVID19. She summarized the upcoming campaign to fight back against DESE’s
proposed changes lowering standards for substitute teachers. The Missouri Supreme Court will
hear MNEA’s HB1413 case on November 16th at 1:30. The hearing will be available virtually.
She highlighted multiple trainings and resources that the Teaching and Learning department will
be offering in the next few weeks. Aull presented a very strong membership report and praised
staff and local leaders for their efforts at all levels for recruitment activities and membership
form collection.
Financial Report – Karen Struemph, CFO, presented the current statement of financial position.
The audit has been successfully completed and the final report is forthcoming. Struemph
thanked the Business department staff for their work supporting the audit. She reviewed the
budget documents and discussed the unusual impacts of COVID 19 on revenues and
expenditures. Cancellation of in-person meetings and travel resulted in significant savings to the
budget. She indicated that MNEA is in a solid position to weather the forecasted COVID 19
economic downturn.
Election Update – Liz Zerr, Political Director, shared the ongoing activities around the
November election including mailings, communications, voter registration, and coalition work to
support MNEA’s recommended candidates at the local, state, and national level. She discussed
the negative implications of Amendment 3. She encouraged leaders to utilize the online
resources available to answer questions and find information.
BOARD BUSINESS
The Board approved:
• 2020-21 MNEA Public relations grants to locals
• 2020-21 Legislative Platform – The platform will continue in its current form
• Proposed revisions to the MNEA Resolutions to be presented at the Fall RA
• Proposed amendments to the MNEA Constitution to be presented at the Fall RA
INFORMATION ITEMS and DATES:
• Representative Assembly materials will be available to delegates on October 21
• Pre-RA virtual discussions will be scheduled for debate on Resolution and Bylaw
amendments
• PAC elections will be held in Governance Districts 1-11. Nomination forms will be in
delegate materials.
