Planning Time MSIP6- President Murray asked members to contact the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education regarding a proposed rule change the would eliminate the minimum standard of 250 minutes per week of planning time. In 2 days, over 1,500 MNEA members contacted DESE. DESE is now reconsidering the rule change. However, self-directed plan time and librarians and counselors were not included in the original rule. Please contact DESE to make your voice heard.
Aggressive Students- MNEA is forming a task force on trauma informed teaching and student behaviors. Park Hill hosted a workshop on employee rights. Vincenzo Iuppa, our staff attorney, recommended several ways to address student behaviors. Options include calling the school violence hotline, file a police report, going to the emergency room and filing an incident report every time there is an issue.
House Bill 1568(Bailey) and House Bill 1569(Macky) have been filed. The bills define seclusion and restraint. Board policies can only allow seclusion and restraint to "promote the health and safety of students, staff and teachers." Any use of seclusion and restraint requires the district to report to DESE within 30 days and report to the parents within 24 hours. This would not include breaking up a fight.
NEA Vision, Mission and Budget- Paul Guess, NEA Director, asked for input about NEA's mission and vision. These have not been updated since 2006. The NEA budget committee is also asking for input regarding anything that NEA would need to be prepared for in the next 3 years. Some ideas were addressing mental health and teacher wellness.
MNEA Retired- Please contact our retired members if you need assistance with anything including back to school events or spring membership. There were 19 members who became per-retired at the Fall RA. Remember the dues can be paid in installments.
Next Meeting- Our next meeting will be February 29 after the winter leadership meeting. We will also meet on April 26 at the Spring RA.
